10 Excel Skills Every Office Job Asks For in 2026

Most office job interviews include a short Excel test. The good news is that they almost always check the same small set of skills. Learn these ten and you will be ready.

1. Clean data entry

Use one row per record and one column per field. Avoid merged cells in data tables.

2. SUM, AVERAGE and COUNT

The basics come up in every test. Practise them on a real sales or attendance sheet.

3. IF and nested IF

Used for grades, targets and pass/fail checks.

4. VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP

The most-asked formula in interviews. XLOOKUP is simpler and works in both directions.

5. COUNTIF and SUMIF

Count or total only the rows that match a condition.

6. Sorting and filtering

7. Conditional formatting

8. Pivot tables

9. Basic charts

10. Keyboard shortcuts

Ctrl + Arrow keys, Ctrl + Shift + L for filters and Alt + = for AutoSum save real time.
